Would it be possible if someone claimed a island next to mine so you could have a island 2x as big?

No one can actually claim an island, when you do /is create it automatically picks which island is yours. If you're lucky to get someone who you know near your own island you guys can build out to each others islands and make a piston bridge to surpass the 1-2 block barrier between each island.
